NASA Remote Sensing for Land Management

This webinar provides an introduction to Landsat, MODIS and VIIRS products related to land management. It covers introductory technical information about satellite remote sensing,  an overview of web tools for accessing land cover data, basic information on soil moisture and evapotranspiration, change detection, and some basic methods for incorporating data into GIS.

Learning Objectives: 

Attendees will be able to access and visualize NASA data from Landsat, MODIS and VIIRS.

No previous remote sensing experience is required. 


This course is intended for land managers at the local, state and federal level, NGOs, international management agencies and private sector organizations.

Session One: Overview of NASA Remote Sensing & Earth Systems Modeling

An introduction to the course, fundamentals of remote sensing, and examples of satellites and sensors for natural resource management. 

Session Two: Overview of Land Cover Mapping

An overview of existing Landsat and MODIS land cover products and processing methods (NDVI, Gap Analysis, Landfire, etc.), and examples of data applications, including wildfire and air quality, site suitability, and phenology. 


Session Three: Overview of Soil Moisture & Evapotranspiration

An overview of satellite, sensors, and models, as well as examples of data applications, including irrigation management and agricultural mapping.

Session Four: Overview of Change Detection

An overview of existing Landsat and MODIS change detection products and processing methods, as well as examples of data applications, including forest disturbance and urban expansion. 

Session Five: Overview of Web Tools for Data Access

An overview of spatial and temporal selection of Landsat and MODIS data, and importing data into GIS.
